Customizing and Using TurboView


Below you'll find information about functionality and customizing the TurboView for personal comfort.

The TurboView in Pause  
*TurboView Text Field:
This is the viewing area for accelerated reading. You can customize Font, Font size and Viewing Position to suit your preference. Please see: Topics above
*TurboView Markers:
When these appear they indicate you have placed a Dog-Ear or Note at this location. Pause and click to view.
*TurboView Info:
This displays the speed you've selected, the current page number and your progress through the document in percentage. By default this info is set to "hide" while you are RapidReading until you move the mouse. It can also be set to stay in view as a selection on the MenuBar under Options.
*TurboView Controls:
These controls are visible when in Pause. They can be used to navigate backwards and forwards through a document, set the speed, add Notes, Dog-Ear Markers, Highlite text and Save the document as a RapidReader (.r2d) file.

Launch the TurboView display for RapidReading
go to the top of the page

From the ParagraphView there are three ways to launch the TurboView window depending on where you wish to start.

To Launch TurboView from ParagraphView
 
  1. Click the "Play Button" on the ParagraphView toolbar Controls. This will launch the TurboView at whatever word is selected in the ParagraphView.

     

  2. OR Press the Space Bar. This will launch TurboView either at the beginning of a document OR if you are already RapidReading, at the last word you read
  3.  

  4. OR Double
      Click
      on any word in the ParagraphView. This will launch TurboView from the word you selected.

    Return to ParagraphView
    go to the top of the page
    When you are RapidReading, the ParagraphView is always available to you to review the text or scan through a document. To return to the ParagraphView simply Press the Space Bar or Double-click any where in the TurboView. This is the equivalent of pressing the "STOP" button on a video player.
     
     
       
    Select the TurboView Screen Position
    go to the top of the page
    For personal reading comfort, you can select one of four locations for the vertical position of the TurboView display.
     
     
    To set the TurboView Screen Position
     
    1. Go to the ParagraphView (see above)

       

    2. On the MenuBar Select Options
    3.  

    4. Click  on  TurboWord Location.
    5.  

    6. Select position 1-4 (top to bottom)
    7.

    Set the Font for the TurboView:
    go to the top of the page
    You can change the Font and the Font Size for the TurboView independently of  Font selection for the ParagraphView. This allows you to customize the display to whatever you find most comfortable.
     
     
    To set the Font Type for display in TurboView
     
    1. Go to the ParagraphView (see above)

       

    2. On the MenuBar Select Options
    3.  

    4. Click "Fonts" 
    5.  

    6. Choose TurboWord Font This will display the Font selection Dialog Box
    7.  

    8. Click OK
    9.  

    10. Your settings will be retained for RapidReader TurboView until you change them.
     
    NOTE: The default font is Times New Roman. In our studies this font was found to be the most comfortable and easiest to read at high speeds. You can return to the default at any time using Restore Default in the Font selection menu.
     
     
       
    Select Proportional Font Size for TurboView:
    go to the top of the page
    You can select from four Proportional Font sizes in TurboView. This is to optimize the reading space for the font type you've selected and allow you to choose a font proportion based on reading conditions and personal preference.
     
     
    To select the Font Size for the TurboView Display
     
    1. Go to the ParagraphView (see above)

       

    2. On the MenuBar Select Options
    3.  

    4. Click  on  TurboWord Font Proportion

       

    5. Select from Small, Medium, Large or Big Type 1-4 (top to bottom)
    6.  

    7. Click OK
    8.  

    9. Your settings will be retained for RapidReader TurboView until you change them.
     
     
       
    Pause the TurboView:
    go to the top of the page
    When you Pause in TurboView the last word you read is displayed until you resume.  This allows you a break for "think time" or to deal with an interruption.

    In addition while in Pause you have access to the TurboView Control Bar functions, Note markers and information about your progress through the document and current reading speed.
     
     
    To Pause in TurboView
     
    1. To Pause: Single-click the mouse anywhere

       

    2. To Resume: Single-click again or Click Play on the Turbo Control Bar
    3.  

      NOTE: Your selected speed, the page number of your location and progress point will be displayed at the bottom of the page.
     
     
       
    Navigating using the TurboView Control Bar:
    go to the top of the page

    One of the unique features of RapidReader is that it is a combination of a document display and a video viewer. On the TurboView Control Bar you will find controls similar to a video player. These will allow you to "Rewind" or "Fast Forward" "skipping" through a document incrementally. You can select increments of Back a Paragraph. Back a Sentence, Forward a Paragraph, or Stop to go to the ParagraphView.

    PLEASE NOTE: To use the TurboView Controls you must Pause RapidReading by Single Clicking.

    To use the Navigation Controls
     
    1. Single-click to Pause

       

    2. Click on the appropriate button in the TurboView Control Bar to use the controls to move back or forward .
    3.  

    4. You will see a new "selection"in the Turbo word window at the point after the action is performed.

       

    5. To resume RapidReading, beginning with the selected word Click Play Button on the TurboView Control Bar

    Go Back or Forward by Sentence while RapidReading
    go to the top of the page

    You don't need to Pause in order to go back a line or paragraph or move forward in a document. You can use the Left / Right arrow keys while you are RapidReading to quickly move within a document. Once at the new location the text will pause briefly then "ramp up" to the selected speed.

    PLEASE NOTE: You will rewind to the beginning of the most recent sentence. This may be the sentence you are currently reading. To move further back repeat the action.

     
     
    Using the Arrow Keys to Navigate by Sentence
     
    To Replay by Sentence
     
    1. While RapidReading: Press the Left Arrow once per sentence to go back. If you wish to go back more than one sentence Press several times in quick succession.

    3. RapidReader will automatically Resume from the new location:

    Go Back or Forward by Paragraph while RapidReading
    go to the top of the page

    You don't need to Pause in order to move back or forward by paragraph in a document. You can use Control + the Left / Right arrow keys while you are RapidReading to quickly move within a document. Once at the new location, the text will pause briefly then "ramp up" to the selected speed.

    NOTE: You will rewind to the beginning of the most recent paragraph. This may be the paragraph you are currently reading. To move further back repeat the action.

    To move back or forward by page in a document. You can use Control + Alt+ the Left / Right arrow keys while you are RapidReading to quickly move within a document. Once at the new location, the text will pause briefly then "ramp up" to the selected speed.

    PLEASE NOTE: You will rewind to the beginning of the most recent page. This may be the page you are currently reading. To move further back repeat the action.

    PLEASE NOTE: A "virtual page" is 280 words in length unless the document is a PDF then the pages correspond to the original page numbers in the PDF.

    Using the Arrow Keys to navigate by page
     
    To jump by Page
     
    1. While RapidReading: Press the Control + Alt + Left/Right Arrow once per paragraph to go back/forward. If you wish to jump more than one paragraph Press several times in quick succession.

    Setting the Speed from the TurboView Control Bar
    go to the top of the page

    While in TurboView you can set the speed using the Turbo Control Speed Icon. You can increase or decrease the speed in increments of 25 WPM between 100 and 950 words per minute.

    To set the Speed from the Turbo Control Bar
     
    1. While RapidReading Single-click to Pause
    2.  

    3. Click on the Up or Down arrow on the Speed Icon on the Control bar to change the speed by 25 WPM
    4.  

    5. You will see the change in speed reflected in the Speed Indicator on the information bar (lower left corner)
    6.  

      NOTE: RapidReader will remember the last speed you selected for the next time you open the application.
     
     
       
    Changing the Speed "On the Fly"
    go to the top of the page

    You can use a keyboard shortcut to change the speed "on the fly" while RapidReading. This allows you to adjust your speed at any time based on the kind of the material you're reading or to optimize for other conditions. Reading speed ranges from 100 WPM to 1200 WPM.

    Speed adjustment is in increments of 25 Words Per Minute.

     
     
    The Keyboard Up / Down Arrow Keys
     
    To change speed with the Keyboard
     
    1. Press the UP Arrow to increase 25 WPM each time
    2.  

    3. Press the DOWN Arrow to decrease 25 WPM each time.
    4.  

    5. You will see the change in speed reflected in the Speed Indicator on the information bar (lower left corner)
    6.  

      NOTE: RapidReader will remember the last speed you selected for the next time you open the application.
     
     
       
    "Double-Time" Through a Section on the Fly
    go to the top of the page

    You can use a keyboard shortcut to temporarily apply a burst of speed to "fast forward" through a section. This will increase your speed to double the current set speed (up to 1000 wpm).

    To temporarily double your set speed
     
    1. Hold Down the Shift Key for the desired length of time
    2.  

    3. Release the Shift Key and you will return to your pre selected speed

    Adding User Notes in TurboView
    go to the top of the page

    You can create User-Notes while in TurboView to add comments for use in RapidReader, You can also save and export the notes as a text file to Copy-Paste into other documents such as reports. A User-Note must be "attached" to a particular word, in TurboView this is automatically selected at the point where you click the Note Icon on the Turbo Control Bar.

    To add a User Note
     
    1. While RapidReading Single-click to Pause

       

    2. Click on the Note Icon on the Control bar
    3.  

    4. This will display the Note Pad Dialog Box
    5.  

    6. Type your Note
    7.  

    8. and Click Done
      NOTE: You must SAVE the file as an .r2d when you close RapidReader to retain any markup you've created,
     
     
       
    The  User Note Marker in TurboView
    go to the top of the page

    When RapidReading the User-Note Marker will show you where you've placed a note. The marker appears in the upper right hand corner of the TurboView screen It is identified with a number in the order with which you've created the note. From the marker you can access the User Note dialog to read the note, edit the note and move between notes. 

    Please NOTE: The User-Note Marker number is the order in which you created the notes NOT the order in which they appear in the document. To learn more please go to Using the Note, Dog-Ear and Highliter features.

    To view a User-Note from the Marker
     
    1. In the ParagraphView Double-click on the Marker ( e.g. {N002} above)

       

    2. This will display the Note Pad Dialog Box
    3.  

    4. You can read or edit your comment in the Note Pad then
    5.  

    6. Click Done at the bottom of the dialog box
    7.  

    8. This will preserve any edits.
     

    NOTE: You must SAVE the file as an .r2d when you close RapidReader to retain any markup you've created,

     
     
       
    Adding Dog-Ears
    go to the top of the page

    Dog-Ears serve three purposes.
    1) Place a mark to locate an item of interest for later review.
    2) To use as a reference to view material in the original document such as tables, charts or pictures.
    3) To use as a convenient way to quickly move from point of interest to point of interest within a document.
    A Dog-Ear must be "attached" to a particular word which you can select in the ParagraphView.

    To insert a Dog-Ear
     
    1. Single-click to Pause

       

    2. Click on the Dog-Ear Icon on the Turbo Control Bar
    3.  

    4. A Dog-Ear Marker will be placed at the word displayed in Turbo Window

    When you are RapidReading, if you have placed a Dog Ear Marker in the text, you will see a Dog-Ear Icon and Index number displayed in the upper right hand corner of the TurboView Display alerting you that this is a section of interest.

    Dog-Ears are a convenient way to navigate from section to section in a document. The Dog -Ear Viewer on the ParagraphView MenuBar allows you to select a Dog-Ear and "go to" the text of the document at that location.

    PLEASE NOTE: The Dog-Ear Marker number is the order in which it was created the NOT the order in which it appears in the document. To learn more please go to Using the Note, Dog-Ear and Highliter features.

    To access the Dog-Ear Viewer from TurboView, Double Click on the Dog-Ear Marker When it Appears
      This will take you to the associated text in ParagraphView.
     
     
       
    Using the Highlite Feature
    go to the top of the page

    The Highlite Mode feature serves several purposes.

    1) You can Highlite text for emphasis when using the ParagraphView
    2) You can navigate through a document from highlite to highlite
    3) Highlites can be saved as a separate text file to Copy-Paste into other documents such as reports. 

    Highlited text will appear in TurboView in a Lime Green Font.

    To use the Text Highliter in TurboView
       
     
    1. In TurboView Single-click to Pause

       

    2. Click on the Highlite Icon on the Turbo Control Bar
    3.  

    4. This will open the ParagraphView in Highlite Mode
      NOTE: You will see two changes
      (a) the information pane at the bottom of the ParagraphView will say "Highlite Mode" and
      (b) the cursor will change to the Highliter tool.
    5.  

    6. Click, and Hold down the mouse button and Drag from the first word you wish to highlite to the end of the passage.
    7.  

    8. Release the mouse. The text you Highlited will have a colored background
    9.  

    10. Single-click on the Highliter Tool Icon  on the ParagraphView ToolBar to return to Normal Mode
    11.  

    12. Launch RapidReader from ParagraphView

    NOTE: The Highlited text will be preserved until you close RapidReader or SAVE AS an .r2d.
     
     
       
    Save As a RapidReader Document .r2d
    go to the top of the page

    While in TurboView you can use the Turbo Controls to save a document with all of your markup. If you are saving the document for the first time you will see a "Save As" dialog box. You can then name and save to a folder as a RapidReader file .r2d.

    There after clicking on the icon will update the document with any new mark-up you may have added.

    To save markup from TurboView
     
    1. Single-click to Pause

       

    2. Click on the Save Icon on the Turbo Control Bar
    3.  

    4. If you haven't saved the document, you will see the Save As dialog box
    5.  

    6. Name the document and choose a destination folder
    7.  

    8. Click Save

    Show or Hide the TurboView Information Bar
    go to the top of the page

    To avoid distraction, by default the Speed, Page and Progress information located at the bottom of the TurboView is timed to "hide" shortly after you begin RapidReading. At any time, if you wish to see the information you can move the mouse to display it without pausing RapidReader.

    However if you wish to leave the display visible, you can change the setting in the Options item on the ParagraphView menubar.
